Beginning the Satyr

I’ve done some casting before but not with silicone, so I’m hoping to get some experience with this. There’s a competition within a competition so to speak that I hope to participate in coming August. It’s a costume contest that’s a highlight event during finals week for the Dota 2 International annual competition. Although I competed last year I didn’t make the stage, so wish me luck this year!

I’m making a costume for the video game’s agility hero Riki. Since I’m only 5’0.5″ and this character has a particularly small character model in game I felt like this was good fit. I also chose my favorite skin, and one of the most popular, the ‘Rightful Heir’ skin by Konras but with a twist. Although all characters can buy the equipment sange and yasha, since it was a popular item for the character he was given a weapon skin set you can equip in game. I want to make these to carry around with me instead of the skin’s weapons.

To start, I began sculpting the mask. This was done using a foam mannequin head (equipped with my measurements of my own head) and NewPlast modeling clay. For additional modeling I used metal sculpting tools I bought for ceramic use. As I got to the more in depth details, I used a rock to smooth out the surface completely and plastic bags to rub in wrinkles. When I finished the sculpting I hammered metal pieces in to catch my plaster drippings and hold the cast in. These I covered in more clay to help secure them. I’m currently getting my kitchen ready to start casting the plaster (and hopefully not destroy the floor in the process).

I’m currently editing the time lapse, but here are the photos of the sculpture before I cast.
